You can always ask your attorney about the progress of your case. You are paying him. He is your employee.

Your lawyer is your employee,so to speak. He is there to serve YOU! Whether you’re paying him up-front,or he’s getting his cut after you get paid makes no difference.
Try to come to an agreeable understanding that you want regular updates as to the progress of your case.He might be agreeable to a weekly phone call (to you,or from you) or letter. But be nice when you have this talk.Don’t p1ss him off.He makes enough money without you,and might decide you’re not worth the effort if you’re being a pain in his @ss.
Understand, however, that you aren’t his only client.Lawyers are very busy people, and as a consequence you might have to deal with his assistants before you get to speak to him.
Above all make sure that this lawyer is moving along with your case in a timely manner. Most lawsuits have a time limit to them,so you might want to make sure that your lawyer has things well in hand before it gets too late. That way you have time to determine whether or not you want to dismiss your current attorney and retain different counsel before the clock runs out.
